I decided on Tuesday that I needed a break. From food, that is. Or, more specifically, bad food. Because, ha, lets face it, I could never give up food, I like it too much. But I’ve been feeling off for a long time, physically and mentally, and have been thinking a break from crappy food would be a good way to clear up my mind and body. I’ve got decisions to make in the coming days/weeks and a figured good ol’ detox would help with clarity in the process. It’s day four, and so far and it’s incredible how refreshing I feel and how clear my thinking is.

When I started, I expected to have a hard time without caffeine each day, but because I’d been slowly tapering my addiction these past few months, suddenly cutting it out was much less painful. I used to drink about 6 American-size mugs of black coffee a day, and somehow I managed to cut that down to about 2-3 European-size mugs a day. Up until about 6 months ago, that is, when it seemed like my new place couldn’t offer a single good cuppa, no matter where I went. Thus my morning addiction made a subtle switch from liquid gold to the steaming delight of that deeply-entrenched British tradition. Yup, I’ve been a straight-up, unashamed tea drinker for months now and I love it. However, I rarely make time in the mornings to sit down and enjoy a nice cuppa, thus I’ve unintentionally been weaning myself off of caffeine for months… So this part of detoxing hasn’t been so bad. I’m so happy.

On the other hand, I’m struggling with not the no sugar thing. Gah, even writing that sentence makes me want to grab some chocolate before I continue writing. Four days in and I feel I’m missing out somehow; it’s really silly, I know. I remember a sugar detox of mine about 3 years ago, I was so badly addicted that I had decided to cut it all out, including fruits and all natural sweeteners. The first two weeks I dealt with the shakes, sweating, headaches and horrible body aches. I was dreading it all this time around and planned for a relaxed schedule accordingly. Amazingly, though, it’s been nothing like it so far. Okay, a little bit of a headache, and an afternoon slump, but I really don’t feel as awful this time around.

I’m currently fighting any sugar cravings with some combination of the following: Bob’s Red Mill steel cut oats, chunky peanut butter, raw cocoa powder and coconut oil. Seriously, it beats the cravings like crazy! I add a little dried fruit or seasonings like cinnamon or nutmeg and it’s sooo delicious. I didn’t realise I could actually enjoy these things together, without some sort of honey or natural sweetener. At. All. I’m amazed at myself, honestly.

In fact, last night, to ease the cravings, I melted a little bit of peanut butter and coconut oil together, added a dash of cocoa powder and cinnamon, and tossed in some raw oats. Yum! Something about the coconut oil adds such a natural sweetness to these little dishes of mine. This morning I slow-cooked oats with pecans, raisins and chopped apple, infusing the water with cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg. Today’s afternoon munchie included celery, peanut butter and raisins. A perfect combination of protein, fiber and this natural sweet/salty flavour. Yesterday’s dinner consisted of quinoa, tofu, sun-dried tomatoes and sautéed onions. So I’m definitely getting delicious meals in and I don’t feel like I’m missing out on much (except for the pizza Rory and Lorelai are currently devouring…).

Testing out a #plantbased diet this week, and so far it’s been pretty yummy. It’s hard to not grab a sweet in the afternoons when I’m feeling tired, but I love how g o o d I feel otherwise. Anyway, back to the detox.  My detox this week is all about cleaning out unnecessary chemicals, preservatives, emulsifiers, and any other processed foods from my diet. I tend to struggle with digestive issues, bloating and a fair amount of brain fog. To counter all of this, I’m consuming only plant-based, all natural whole foods. This includes fruits and vegetables, legumes, nuts and seeds, oils, whole grains and quinoa. Nothing with any added anything. (Ha, I like that sentence.) It’s amazing the combinations that can be made from just these things. It all felt quite limiting to me in the beginning, seeing as I’m a baker AND I love comfort food, but I’m using Instagram and Pinterest to gather ideas for flavourful, unique meals and I’m finding SO much out there. I’ve even managed to influence the boy a bit and he’s cutting more and more processed food and drink out of his diet as well. (Although he likes to cheat with a Vanilla Coke every now and then…)

Afternoon snack

I feel like I’m behind on a trend, what with so many being on this plant-based, organic and vegan diet, but it’s not really about getting on a trend or “going vegan” or even making a statement. I simply need to give my mind and body a good cleanse and there’s nothing wrong with that! I have a series of decisions that need to be made, and I feel a clear mind and a clean body are a solid start to making those decisions. I may even stick to it longer after these 10 days, just because I like it. But certainly not because it’s trendy right now.

Anyway, it’s only day four and I already feel very good about myself. Curious, when was the last time you did something to make you feel good about yourself? Not in a vain, look-at-me sort of way, but in a positive, I actually do like myself, way? Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, and they need to be cared for and nurtured; they’re not our own and it’s a privilege to care for them. It’s also okay to do things that make us feel good inside and out, especially if that includes a healthier diet and a healthier mind. I’m not saying we should never binge out or enjoy a pint of ice cream now and then, all I’m saying is it’s good to recognise when our minds AND bodies need a little TLC.
